The Honest Woodcutter: A Tale of Integrity and Kindness

In a peaceful village nestled deep within the forest, there lived a hardworking woodcutter named Mark. He was known throughout the village for his honesty and integrity. Every day, Mark would journey into the woods, chop wood, and sell it in the market to provide for his family.

The Day of the Lost Axe

One day, as Mark was chopping wood by the river, his axe slipped out of his hand and fell into the water. The river was deep, and Mark was heartbroken, for his axe was his most valuable possession. Without it, he couldn’t earn a living.

Mark sat down by the riverbank, feeling helpless. He knew he didn’t have enough money to buy a new axe. Just as he was about to leave in despair, something magical happened. The river started to sparkle, and out of the water emerged a figure—an old, wise-looking man with a long beard. He was the guardian of the river.

The guardian held up a shining golden axe and asked Mark, “Is this your axe?”

Mark, amazed by the beauty of the golden axe, shook his head and replied, “No, that is not my axe.”

The guardian then dipped back into the water and reappeared with a silver axe. “Is this your axe?” he asked.

Mark, as honest as ever, replied, “No, that is not my axe either.”

Finally, the guardian brought out Mark’s old, worn-out iron axe. “Is this your axe?” he asked.

With a smile of relief, Mark said, “Yes, that’s my axe!”

The Reward for Honesty

The guardian was so impressed by Mark’s honesty that he not only returned the iron axe but also gave him the golden and silver axes as a reward. Mark was overjoyed and thanked the guardian with all his heart.

When he returned to the village, he told the story to everyone. The villagers were amazed at Mark’s honesty and praised him for his integrity. From that day on, Mark was known as the Honest Woodcutter, and his story was told to children in every home.

The Moral of the Story
